Public Transport: Transperth
Perth's public transport system is run by Transperth, which operates trains, buses, and ferries across the metropolitan area. The system is reliable, clean, and safe, with most services running from about 5:00 AM to midnight on weekdays.
The SmartRider Card
The SmartRider is a contactless smartcard used across all Transperth services. Benefits include:
- Automatically calculates the cheapest fare (Autoload function)
- Daily fare cap: $10.80 (full fare) / $5.40 (concession)
You can purchase a SmartRider at Transperth InfoCentres (Perth Station, Elizabeth Quay), authorised retailers, or online. Register it online to protect your balance if lost.
Train Network
Five train lines radiate from the city:
- Joondalup Line (Yanchep): North through Joondalup, Warwick, Stirling to the CBD.
- Midland Line: East through Bayswater to Midland.
- Fremantle Line: West through Subiaco, Cottesloe to Fremantle.
- Armadale Line: South-east through Victoria Park, Cannington to Armadale.
- Mandurah Line: South through Murdoch, Cockburn, Rockingham to Mandurah.
- Airport Line: Direct connection from the CBD to Perth Airport.
Trains run every 5 — 15 minutes during peak and every 15 — 30 minutes off-peak. The network is fully monitored with CCTV for safety.
Bus Network
Buses complement the train network, reaching suburbs not served by rail. Key routes include:
- CircleRoute (998/999): Orbital service connecting major hubs.
- Central Area Transit (CAT): Free buses in the CBD, Fremantle, and Joondalup. Red, Yellow, Blue, Green, and Purple CAT services cover different zones.
- NightRider: Late-night services on weekends from the city to outer suburbs.
Ferry
The Elizabeth Quay: Mends Street (South Perth) ferry operates daily, offering a scenic 6-minute crossing. It connects to South Perth's foreshore and the Perth Zoo. SmartRider works on the ferry.
Cycling in Perth
Perth has over 700 km of dedicated bike paths, including the excellent PSR (Principal Shared Path) network alongside the Swan River and major roads. The city is relatively flat, making cycling practical. You can take bicycles on trains (off-peak) and ferries. Bicycle parking is available at most train stations and city buildings.
Driving
Perth is a car-dependent city overall. Key roads:
- Mitchell Freeway (North): Connects CBD to Joondalup and beyond.
- Kwinana Freeway (South): Connects CBD to Mandurah.
- Tonkin Highway: Eastern bypass connecting north and south.
- Roe Highway / Reid Highway: Major east-west arterials.
Main Roads WA operates electronic toll-free highways. Peak hour congestion is moderate compared to Sydney or Melbourne: expect 30 — 45 min delays on the worst days.
Rideshare & Taxis
Uber and Ola operate widely across Perth. Swan Taxis is the main taxi company. A trip from the CBD to the airport costs about $40 — $50 by taxi or $25 — $35 by Uber.
Perth Airport Transport
The Airport Line train is the most convenient option (Perth Station to Airport Central in 18 minutes). Alternatively, the 380 bus connects the domestic terminals, and taxis/Uber operate from designated ranks.
