Perth's Beach Culture
Perth is blessed with some of the best urban beaches in the world. The coastline stretches for over 80 km of sand from Two Rocks in the north to Rockingham in the south. The Indian Ocean is warm enough for swimming from November to April, and the west-facing coast delivers spectacular sunset views every evening.
Iconic Beaches
Cottesloe Beach
Perth's most famous beach, Cottesloe is a postcard-perfect crescent of white sand with the historic Indiana Tea House and Cottesloe Surf Club as landmarks. The protected swimming area and gentle waves make it ideal for families. The Sunday Cottesloe Sunset Markets run in summer. Cafés and pubs line Marine Parade. Best for: families, sunset watching, the iconic Perth beach experience.
Scarborough Beach
Scarborough underwent a massive $15 million redevelopment and now has a world-class foreshore with a large amphitheatre, beach volleyball courts, skate park, playground, and a popular dining strip. The surf break is excellent for bodyboarding and beginner surfing. A lively hub year-round with regular events. Best for: surfers, nightlife, events, families.
Trigg Beach
Just north of Scarborough, Trigg has a more rugged, natural feel. It's a popular surf beach with consistent breaks. Nearby, the Trigg Bushland Reserve offers coastal walking trails and the Trigg Island SLSC (Surf Life Saving Club). Best for: experienced surfers, nature lovers.
City Beach
An upmarket, well-groomed beach popular with families and fitness enthusiasts. The City Beach precinct has a pool, café, restaurant, and well-maintained facilities. The beach is patrolled year-round. Best for: families, swimming, sunbathing.
Swanbourne Beach
Perth's only official nude beach. Tucked between Cottesloe and City Beach, it's a quiet, natural stretch of sand. Away from the main beach area, discretion is respected. Best for: naturists, quiet escapes.
Northern Beaches
- Mettams Pool (North Beach): A natural rock pool perfect for snorkelling and families with young children. Sheltered and calm.
- Sorrento Beach: Clean, patrolled, and with a great kiosk. Popular with local families.
- Hillarys Beach: Adjacent to Hillarys Boat Harbour, with calm waters and a marina precinct offering dining and shopping.
- Burns Beach: A relatively undeveloped family beach with a playground and café. Great for quiet afternoons.
- Mullaloo Beach: Wide, sandy, and less crowded than the southern neighbours. Patrolled in summer.
- Yanchep Lagoon: A protected swimming lagoon with a reef, grassed area, and café. About 50 min north of the CBD.
Southern Beaches
- Port Beach & Leighton Beach (North Fremantle): Great surf breaks and dog-friendly areas. Close to Fremantle's cafés.
- Coogee Beach: A calm, family-friendly beach with a jetty and the Coogee Maritime Trail for divers.
- Rockingham Beach: Shallow, clear waters make this a favourite for families. The Rockingham foreshore has a great playground and cafés.
- Penguin Island (off Rockingham): Home to a colony of little penguins. Accessible by ferry or kayak.
Rottnest Island Beaches
Rottnest Island has 63 beaches, many of them world-class. Don't miss:
- The Basin: The most popular swimming and snorkelling beach, right next to the main settlement.
- Little Salmon Bay: Part of a protected marine reserve, excellent snorkelling.
- Pinky Beach: A quieter spot near the golf course with beautiful views.
- Strickland Bay: Known for its surf break (North Point).
Beach Safety
- Swim between the red and yellow flags at patrolled beaches.
- Check the Beach Report via the WA Department of Primary Industries for water quality ratings.
- Be aware of rips: if caught, don't fight it, swim parallel to the shore.
- Marine stingers (bluebottles) are common in summer. Vinegar stations are provided at most patrolled beaches.
- Sharks are present in the ocean: use the SharkSmart WA app for real-time alerts.
Water Temperatures and the Swimming Season
Perth's beaches are swimmable for most of the year, but the water is genuinely cold in winter: the Indian Ocean drops to around 19°C in August and September, while summer sea temperatures peak at 23–24°C in February and March. The practical rule locals use is simple — October to May for swimming, with the best conditions from December to March when the afternoon sea breeze (the famous 'Fremantle Doctor') keeps the heat bearable. In winter, the beaches are still glorious for walking, running and whale-watching (humpbacks migrate past the coast from September to December), but you will want a wetsuit for surfing.
Beach Safety and Etiquette
- Swim between the flags: patrolled beaches (Cottesloe, Scarborough, Trigg, City Beach) have lifeguards only in designated zones. Rips kill people every year in Australia — if you get caught in one, float and raise an arm rather than fighting it.
- Sun protection: the UV index in Perth summer regularly hits 11+ (extreme). Slip-slop-slap applies year-round; a cloudy 25°C day can still burn in 20 minutes.
- Sharks: the metro coast has drum lines and aerial patrols, but dawn and dusk are still higher-risk times — avoid swimming alone at sunrise or sunset.
- Dogs: each beach has off-leash and on-leash zones; check the City of Stirling or Town of Cottesloe maps before letting your dog run.
- Parking: beach car parks fill by 9am on summer weekends. Go early, or use the free CAT-style bus services and cycle paths that connect the coast.
