Perth's location is unique: it's one of the most isolated capital cities in the world, but that also means the natural wonders on its doorstep are unspoilt. Within a few hours' drive you can reach world-class wine regions, ancient geological formations, pristine beaches, and unique wildlife experiences.
Swan Valley
Distance: 25 minutes from CBD | Best for: Wine, food, breweries, family outings
The Swan Valley is WA's oldest wine region (dating to 1830s) and is just a 25-minute drive from the Perth CBD. It's a compact region with over 40 cellar doors, breweries, distilleries, and food producers. Don't miss:
- Wine tasting: Houghton, Sandalford, Mandoon, John Kosovich Wines
- Breweries: Mandoon Estate Homestead Brewery, Feral Brewing Co, Mash Brewing
- Distilleries: Whipper Snapper Distillery (gin), Swan Valley Distillery

- Whiteman Park: Massive conservation park on the way to the valley, great for families
- Guildford: Historic town at the entrance to the valley, with antique shops and pubs
Rottnest Island
Distance: 25 min ferry from Fremantle, 45 min from Perth | Best for: Quokkas, cycling, swimming, snorkelling
No trip to Perth is complete without visiting Rottnest Island. A car-free paradise with 63 beaches, it's ideal for a full day or overnight trip. Hire a bike (the only way to get around, aside from the bus), explore the bays, and meet the quokkas. Ferry services run from Fremantle (Rottnest Express, SeaLink) and Elizabeth Quay (Rottnest Fast Ferries). Book ahead in summer: the island sells out.
Pinnacles Desert & Cervantes
Distance: 2 hours north of CBD | Best for: Unique landscapes, stargazing, lobsters
The Pinnacles Desert in Nambung National Park is a surreal landscape of thousands of ancient limestone pillars rising from golden sand. Best visited at sunrise or sunset for photography. Combine with a visit to Cervantes, a small fishing town famous for its fresh Western Rock Lobster (crayfish). The Lobster Shack is a worth visiting for lunch. Lake Thetis nearby has living stromatolites: one of the oldest life forms on Earth.
Margaret River & South-West
Distance: 2.5 — 3 hours south of CBD | Best for: Wine, surfing, forests, gourmet food
While often a weekend destination, Margaret River can be done as a day trip if you start early. The region is world-famous for Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Highlights on a day trip:
- Busselton Jetty: The longest wooden jetty in the Southern Hemisphere (1.8 km), with an underwater observatory.
- Wine tasting: Leeuwin Estate, Vasse Felix, Cullen Wines, Voyager Estate
- Boranup Karri Forest: Towering karri trees with scenic drives and walking trails.
- Ngilgi Cave / Mammoth Cave: Ancient limestone caves with guided tours.
- Surfing: Main Break at Margaret River, Surfer's Point, and Prevelly.
For a less ambitious day trip, head to Mandurah (1 hour south) for canal cruises, dolphin tours, and seafood.
Avon Valley & York
Distance: 1.5 hours east of CBD | Best for: History, wildflowers, country pubs
The Avon Valley is WA's oldest inland agricultural region. York (founded 1831) is a well-preserved heritage town with colonial architecture, antique stores, and country pubs. In spring (Aug — Oct), the area is blanketed with wildflowers. The Avon River is popular for canoeing and kayaking after rain. Combine with a stop at Northam or Toodyay for a full tour of the Avon Valley.
Wave Rock
Distance: 3.5 hours east of CBD | Best for: Geology, outback scenery
Wave Rock is a 15-metre-high, 110-metre-long natural rock formation shaped like a massive ocean wave. Formed over 2.5 billion years, it's a spectacular sight. The small town of Hyden offers accommodation. Nearby attractions include the Hippo's Yawn and Mulka's Cave. It's a long day trip (7 hours driving round-trip) but very rewarding. Better as an overnight trip if you have time.

- New Norcia (1.5 hrs north): Australia's only monastic town, with a historic Benedictine monastery, bakery, and museum.
- Serpentine Falls (50 min south): A picturesque waterfall in Serpentine National Park, great for swimming in spring.
- Rockingham / Penguin Island (45 min south): Dolphin cruises, the island's little penguin colony, and calm beaches.
- Lancelin Sand Dunes (1.5 hrs north): White sand dunes perfect for sandboarding and 4WD adventures.
- John Forrest National Park (20 min east): WA's first national park with waterfalls, walking trails, and picnic spots.
Day Trip Planning Tips
- Rent a car if you don't have one: day trips are best done by private vehicle.
- Fill up with petrol before leaving the city: fuel is more expensive in regional areas.
- Download offline maps: mobile reception can be patchy in the South-West and inland.
- Check park fees: national parks require a $16/day vehicle entry fee (or $96 annual pass).
- Bring water, sun protection, and insect repellent: especially in summer.
